Coordinating outfits for your family photo session shouldn’t be hard. But let’s face it, it can be stressful. I’m here to help!
After years of doing family photography, I have created a Family Outfit Guide and a helpful prep guide so my clients have a successful session.
I’m sharing a few of those tips with you below!

PLAN AHEAD
Fall is a crazy busy time for family photographers and their calendars fill up fast. Reach out to your photog at least two weeks in advance to ensure you get on her schedule.
COORDINATE YOUR WARDROBE
This may be the most stressful part for moms, but it’s not as hard as you think. For instance, pick 2-3 colors and have everyone wear a shade of those color palettes. There’s ways to coordinate your outfits without being too matchy-matchy . Your photographer should help with this as well. 😉

MENTALLY PREP THE KIDS
Tell them you’re going to a photoshoot and it’s going to be fun! Tell them it’s also important to put on their listening ears, follow directions and smile big! On a side note: schedule your session at a time when your kids are well-fed and have had a nap. As a result, they will be more cheerful.
GET DAD ON BOARD
It’s no secret some men hate doing family photos because trying to wrangle a bunch of kids can be tough. If this is the case, I tell moms to remind their husbands that their babies will only be little once, and that these family photos mean so much to you! Happy, helpful dads equals happy kids.
HAVE FUN !
You’re hiring a professional photographer to pose you, interact with your children, sing funny songs and play peek-a-boo to get real smiles (not cheesy fake ones). All you have to do is have fun with your children during the session; the photog does all the hard work. And if your kids just aren’t having it, your photographer should have a few tricks up her sleeve to still capture those heartwarming images you’ll treasure forever!
